YOUR GIVING IS A SPIRITUAL BAROMETER

I. INTRODUCTION:

  1. The Preacher who made it a practice of taking his tempature before he preached. But one day he could not find the thermometer; so, he consulted the barometer, and the reading was "windy" and "dry."

  2. Our giving indicates something just as the barometer tells us something.

  3. You can many times find what people are doing, but find out very little about the person. If you could find the checkbook you would know more about the person. Where the money goes tells us a lot about the person.

II. OUR GIVING IS A BAROMETER OF THE SINCERITY OF OUR LOVE.

  1. Prove the sincerity of your love. 2 Cor. 8:8

  2. One man said he like to think that he was actually giving it into the hand of Jesus Christ and saying: "Here, Lord, this is how much I love you." If we all did this we would never have a problem with budgets.

  3. When we love someone we want to know about their birthday and special days and remember them.

  4. Women and her child on a ship on a grave marker July 4, 1900. These two were the sole surviviors of the estate to be administered in the name of the mother or daughter. Love gives sacrifice. God gave His Son.

  5. Christ gave himself for the church. Eph. 5:25

  6. The early Christians loved each other and they gave.

  7. This is the love of God that you keep His commandments.

  8. The sinful women washing and kissing Jesus feet.

  9. The money we spend and not give reveals our love. (ie: boats, RVs, cars, etc.)

  10. We can give and not love, but it is imposible to love and not give.

  11. We love God with all our hearts and souls, and strngth... Matt. 22:37

III. OUR GIVING IS A BAROMETER OF OUR FAITH IN THE PROMISES

  1. Honour the Lord with all thy substance. Prov. 3:9-10

  2. We would all invest in a business that would nver go bankrupt. If we could get a very liberal return on our investment. God cannot lie. Titus 1:2 Earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof. We need to pray "Lord increase our faith."

IV. OUR GIVING INDICATES HOW MUCH WE BELIEVE IN HEAVEN AND EARNESTLY WANT TO GO THERE.

  1. 1. Many devote long hours to little league. Why? They are interested in it. Some invest thousands of dollars in the church and Christian education. They are interested in it.

  2. 2. What ever we have an interest in. We have an interest in that company.

  3. 3. They have failed to lay up because they have failed to lay down.

IV. OUR GIVING IS A BAROMETER OF OUR CONCERN FOR THE LOST AND UNFORTUNATE.

  1. Our money is directed to saving the lost. Yes, we use money in building meeting houses, etc. -means to an end-

  2. In all our different works in the church to save the lost.

  3. They have failed to lay up because they have failed to lay down.

  4. Men like to be caught up a great cause. The Lord's is the greatest.

    • A. Worldwide. Acts 1:8; Matt. 28:18-20.

    • B. In all our different works in the church to save the lost.

    • C. It cost the blood of Christ. Acts 20:28

    • D. It was eternally purposed by God. Eph 3:10

V. OUR GIVING IS A BAROMETER OF OUR CONCERN AND INTEREST IN THE LOCAL CHURCH, IT'S WORK, AND IT'S GROWTH.
